Georgia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is to create special agricultural zone in the Imereti region, in the western part of the country. The project, which should be completed by the end of 2018, provides for the creation of large greenhouse clusters. According to government sources, around 100 million lari (33 million euros) is scheduled to be invested in the project.
“The main goal of the project is to support and stimulate the traditional agricultural sector of western Georgia, particularly vegetables, which has a huge export potential. We would like to help growers find new markets around the world and export as much produce as possible,” said the ministry in a statement.
The project is open to everyone who is interested in the field of agriculture and farming. Besides citizens of Georgia, any legal entity registered in the country can benefit from the programme. Participants need to commit to building no less than 0.1 ha and no more than 5 ha of greenhouse space on their existing land. During the implementation of the project, the government has promised to ensure that the Imereti agricultural zone benefits from the necessary electricity, water and gas infrastructure.
Investment will provide the infrastructure necessary for freezing, packing and preparing produce for both local and international markets
