Emerging Europe Organised the First Meeting of CEE Diplomats Residing in London

Diplomats from Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland and Ukraine, as well as experts from: the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), André Küüsvek, Director of  Local Currency and Capital Markets Development; CMS Cameron McKenna, Iain Batty, Senior Partner Responsible Commercial Practice in Central and Eastern Europe; the Economist Intelligence Unit, Joan Hoey, Senior Editor for Europe and Patrick Graham, a Senior Correspondent at Thomson Reuters. All took part in the Emerging Europe’s Diplomats’ event on May the 16th at the Bulgarian Embassy to London.

The event was opened by HE Konstantin Dmitrov, the Bulgarian Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s. He welcomed the participants and briefly discussed his country’s recent successes, especially in the outsourcing sector. Andrew Wrobel, Head of Editorial at Emerging Europe, talked about the publication’s mission to discuss the best that the CEE region has to offer and the most recent editorial projects and events that Emerging Europe has been engaged in.

The panel focussed on the image the region has in the UK. Amongst its key messages were that the CEE countries have much to gain by working together, in order to increase their competitiveness in the global market and to improve the region’s image.

Experts also talked about the region’s advantages and challenges, trade and investment promotion and FDI inflow into the region, as well as how the countries could work together to promote themselves in the UK. The EBRD’s SEE Link initiative was given as an example of an activity that integrates a group of individual countries letting them join forces to develop their capital markets.

The May event was the first in a series of events, addressed at emerging Europe diplomats residing in London. The next one is planned for early autumn.

A special thanks goes to CMS Cameron McKenna and the Bulgarian Embassy in London who helped put the event together.

Let’s stop wasting our time redefining our place in Europe (Andrew Wrobel’s editorial published after the event)
