Former Ukrainian president Yanukovych guilty of treason

A court in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has found the country’s former president, Viktor Yanukovych, guilty of treason.

The court ruled that in March 2014 Mr Yanukovych deliberately violated Ukraine’s sovereignty by asking Vladimir Putin to deploy Russia’s armed forces in the country.

Mr Yanukoych was forced to flee Ukraine shortly afterwards following a popular uprising against his decision not to pursue an association agreement with the European Union. He later surfaced in Russia, where he remains in hiding.
