Following much speculation, it has been confirmed that Pope Francis will visit Romania from May 31 to June 2. The pope will visit the capital Bucharest, Iași, Blaj, and a popular Catholic pilgrimage site at Șumuleu Ciuc.
There are around 900,000 Catholics in Romania, just under five per cent of the population. The Catholic Church is the second largest denomination in the country after the Romanian Orthodox Church.
In 1999, Pope John Paul II became the first pope to visit Romania, the first visit in history by a pontiff to a predominantly Orthodox country.
