Slovenia becomes first NATO state to appoint female army chief

Major General Alenka Ermenc has been appointed as the head of Slovenia’s army. She replaces Major General Alan Geder and becomes the first woman to least an army in a NATO state.

Slovenian President Borut Pahor said Mrs Ermenc’s appointment will help improve and modernise the country’s armed forces.

“Major General Alenka Ermenc meets high professional criteria, has extensive managerial experience and demonstrates determination. Because of these virtues, I recently promoted her to the rank of Major General”, said the president.

Female representation in NATO is currently just 6.8 per cent.
