Lietuvos Energija takes over Stemma Group wind farms

Lithuania’s state-run energy group Lietuvos Energija is to acquire wind farms with a total capacity of 34 megawatts from domestic operator Stemma Group, becoming the second largest producer of wind energy in the Baltic States, accounting for nine per cent of the market.

The agreement is part of Lietuvos Energija’s strategy to increase green generation capacities by 2030. The strategy includes the development of energy infrastructure and green energy, development of global competitiveness of the company and the country in general, development of new energy service platforms and a hub of energy-tech competences.

According to Darius Maikštėnas, CEO and chairman of the board of Lietuvos Energija, land located in the windiest part of the Lithuania are also being purchased.

“In the future, instead of purchasing existing power plants, Lietuvos Energija will have the opportunity to build new wind farms,” he said.

“After a long discussion we have decided to reduce strategically our managed wind power package, but we remain active players in the renewable energy market,” commented Inga Gusiatina, co-owner of Stemma Group.

Stemma Group is one of the major renewable energy investors in Lithuania, currently operating four wind farms. The energy produced by all parks comprised about 22 per cent of the total wind energy generated in Lithuania in 2016 and 17 per cent of all renewable energy sources produced in the country.

“We will not hide the fact that active negotiations with several foreign companies have taken place, but we are glad that the wind parks will remain in Lithuanian hands and that they will contribute to the implementation of our country’s renewable energy strategy,” she continued.
