The owner and chief presenter of the Czech Republic’s most controversial television channel, Jaromír Soukup, has said that he has founded own political party, just in time to field candidates in May’s European elections.
The announcement was made during his show on TV Barrandov, the television channel he owns, explaining that List Jaromir Soukup aims to defend Czech national interests from corrupt politicians and oligarchs.
“For over a year, I’ve been discussing with the most important politicians what is bothering us all. I’ve pointed out many pressing issues and it was me who drew attention, for the first time, to the huge difference between what politicians say and do. That’s why I decided that I want to actively get involved,” Mr Soukup said.
The Czech Ministry of the Interior, however, has said that no new registrations for political parties has been submitted since November.
Mr Soukup has been politically active in the past. In 2009, he ran for the European parliament as a candidate of the Democratic Party but received only 72 votes.
The first item on his agenda is to push through a legal responsibility for politicians to make the lives of their own citizens better. Mr Soukup blames politicians for a lack of apartments, expensive gas and electricity, overpriced internet and mobile services among other things, while paying billions to solar-barons and oligarchs for things the state should be providing.
