Eight cities from Central and Eastern Europe have been ranked among the smartest in the world in IMD’s 2019 Smart Cities Index.
According to the Switzerland-based business school, Prague tops the list for emerging Europe, scoring 19th globally with a “BBB” ranking. Warsaw came in a distant second, having been ranked 61st on the overall list with a “B” ranking while Krakow was ranked third (69th globally with a “CCC” ranking).
The IMD ranking also includes Budapest (ranked 83rd), Bratislava (ranked 84th) and Bucharest (ranked 85th), all with a “CC” ranking.
They are followed by Sofia (89th/”CC”) and Kyiv (92nd/”C”).
The IMD index assesses a city’s efforts and success in embracing smart technologies to improve the lives of their citizens.
“Smart cities also create an optimal environment for cities to experiment in critical areas,” the IMD said in a statement, adding that “these range from urban planning, sustainable energy, and transport strategies to social integration and talent attraction.”
“Smart cities are growing and blossoming in all parts of the world. Economic realities cannot be ignored: cities in poorer countries face disadvantages, which will require specific actions to correct along the path towards smartness,” said Arturo Bris, director of the IMD World Competitiveness Center.
