Bulgarian justice minister resigns over real estate scandal

Bulgaria’s justice minister Tsetska Tsacheva has announced her resignation following a scandal involving real estate purchases by government officials and members of the country’s ruling party.

According to an investigative report published by RFE/RL and bigot.bg, Ms Tsacheva and three other politicians of the ruling centre-right GERB party purchased luxurious apartments below market prices.

In 2017, GERB MPs adopted legislation amending the country’s construction regulations and allowing Arteks, a development firm, to build the apartments that were eventually purchased by government politicians.

Ms Tsacheva denied any wrongdoing and asked the Bulgarian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate her case.

Earlier this month, the Bulgarian prosecutor-general’s office announce that it will launch an investigation into a property deal made by Tsvetan Tsvetanov, the deputy chairman of the ruling party who has also been named in the report. Mr Tsvetanov, who is considered the second most influential politician in Bulgaria after prime minister Boyko Borissov, also denies any involvement.

The probe also reveals the involvement of deputy sports minister Vanya Koleva, who has also announced her resignation.
