Aleksandra Dulkiewicz has become the first female mayor of Gdańsk’s. Ms Dulkiewicz, the former deputy of Paweł Adamowicz, who was murdered at a charity event in January, won a landslide victory in a vote to elect a new mayor on March 3.
Ms Dulkiewicz, 39, a lawyer and local government official who has worked alongside Mr Adamowicz for the last 13 years, took 82.2 per cent of the vote. Turnout of 48.98 per cent.
Ms Dulkiewicz paid tribute to her former boss and thanked voters in a statement issued on March 4:
“Yesterday morning, when I woke up, I knew that it was seven weeks since the murder of Paweł Adamowicz. It was not until then that I realised that it would be necessary to replace him. Beloved Gdańskers, I am asking for constructive criticism, I am asking for support and help, but I am also asking that, as in the last seven weeks, we should continue to be a community.”
Magdalena Adamowicz, Mr Adamowicz’s widow, congratulated Ms Dulkiewicz.
“Aleksandra, congratulations! You have received a huge mandate. I know and I believe that you will use it well.”
