Debrecen to build major airport extension

The mayor of Debrecen, László Papp, has announced plans to build a new passenger terminal at the city’s airport.

Little used a decade ago, the airport has seen enormous growth over the past few years and served more than 380,000 passengers per year. Total passenger numbers for 2019 are set to almost double to 600,000, and the airport’s current, small terminal, has become increasingly overcrowded.

“The airport is under continuous development, but the current terminal has reached its capacity,” said János Vajda, director of Debrecen Airport.

In June, the airport announced that it had signed a strategic partnership with emerging Europe’s largest low-cost carrier, Wizz Air, to construct a new runway.

The airport – the largest in eastern Hungary – currently offers flights to 14 European destinations.
