A Romanian living in Sweden has become the toast of his home country thanks to his rather cheeky number plate, MUIEPSD.
The plate — perfectly legal in Sweden, where number plates can be personalised for a fee of around 1000 euros — roughly translates from the Romanian as ‘Fuck you PSD’ (the PSD being Romania’s ruling party, which has long been deeply unpopular with the Romanian diaspora).
In fact, the first part of the number plate refers to a certain sexual act, which we shall not go into. In brief: those Romanians who support the PSD find the number plate offensive. For the owner of the car, this includes the vast majority of the country’s police force. As such, the car has been stopped on numerous occasions since its driver entered Romania last week.
The driver will not doubt be taking part in a huge anti-government rally the Romanian diaspora has planned for Bucharest on August 10. Although the spiky mayor of Bucharest Gabriela Firea – a member of the PSD – has refused to authorise the protest, diaspora groups, as well as local anti-government activists, have said that they will go ahead regardless.
