Estonian unemployment falls to record low

Unemployment in Estonia has dropped to a 20-year low according to new figures from Statistics Estonia.

The average unemployment rate for 2018 was 5.4 per cent, with the labour force participation rate at 71.9 per cent and the employment rate standing at 68.1 per cent.

A total of 702,400 people were active in the Estonian labour market through 2018, a year-on-year rise of 3,600, with the number of employed persons rising by a little over 6,000 to 664,700. The annual average number of unemployed persons was 37,700, 2,600 fewer than in 2017.

The number of long-term unemployed (those who have been out of work for more than 12 months) fell to 9,400, a 20-year low.

However, while youth unemployment fell, it remains at a relatively high 11.8 per cent.
