Oleksiy Honcharuk set to be next prime minister of Ukraine

Ukraine’s Servant of the People party, which has a majority in the country’s new parliament, has agreed to support Oleksiy Honcharuk for post of prime minister, RBC Ukraine has reported.

Mr Honcharuk, who currently serves as deputy chief of staff for the economy to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, will now have to be officially nominated by the president and approved by parliament. This could happen later on August 29.

Prior to joining the president’s staff, the 35-year-old law graduate previously worked as an assistant to former economic development minister Stepan Kubiv. The Ukrainian press has pointed out that Mr Honcharuk was apparently a supporter of former president, Petro Poroshenko, during the presidential election held earlier this year and won by Mr Zelensky.
