Ukrainian MPs have rejected a resolution that would have given parliament’s consent to the resignation of the country’s prime minister Volodymyr Groysman.
Of the 450 lawmakers who make up the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, only 97 voted in favour the resolution.
Mr Groysman resigned from his position on May 22 after new Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he would dissolve parliament and call for snap elections. With his resignation having been rejected, he is now expected to stay on as PM until the snap election takes place on July 21.
Under Ukrainian law, Mr Groysman’s resignation would have resulted in the resignation of his entire cabinet.
At the same time, Mr Zelensky’s administration tabled motions to dismiss defence minister Stepan Poltorak, foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin and security service chief Vasyl Hrytsak. According to Ukrainian media reports, the president’s cabinet is also drafting motions to sack Yuriy Lutsenko, Ukraine’s prosecutor general.
