An ongoing motorway construction project between Austria and Croatia via Slovenia is set to be completed by the autumn, facilitating much easier access for tourists and migrants crossing through Slovenia to Croatia.
Slovenian national motorway company DARS announced in May that the final section of the new highway, which lies between Ptuj in Slovenia and the Croatian border, was two months ahead of schedule. The first part of the motorway was opened last year. Once completed the motorway will ease serious congestion and complete the E59 motorway link from Prague to Zagreb, facilitating the easier movement of both goods and people.
Construction of the final section has cost 251 million euros, of which almost half – 113 million euros – was provided via a loan from the European Investment Bank. DARS spent 71 million euros from its own funds, with the remaining 67 million euros coming from EU funding. Work began in mid-2015. The construction of the motorway included diverting a number of existing roads, the building of seven overpasses, three underpasses, two subways, nine highway bridges and one tunnel.
