Romanian MEP rechristens Latvia as ‘Letiția’

Maria Grapini, a Romanian MEP well-known for the grammatical gaffes which pepper her idiosyncratic social media posts, has once again become a laughing stock after rechristening Latvia as Letiția.

In a post on her personal Facebook account, Mrs Grapini wrote: “A number of heartfelt MEPs from Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Letiția are discussing how to save international transport in eastern Europe.”

The Romanian name for Latvia is Letonia.

The post has since been deleted, but not before it quickly went viral on thousands of Romanian social media accounts. One Facebook user commented: “Perhaps the capital of Letiția is Rigiția?”
