New terminal at Kutaisi airport to open next year

The construction of a new terminal at Kutaisi International Airport in Georgia will be completed by the end of 2019. The new terminal will provide better and faster services to the increasing number of passengers who use the airport, the second busiest in the country.

“More than half a million people used the airport over the first 10 months of this year, of whom 52 per cent were foreigners, who entered Georgia as tourists,” said Akaki Sagirashvili, Georgia’s deputy minister of economy and sustainable development.

According to Mr Sagirashvili, the new terminal at Kutaisi will be three times larger than the current one, covering more than 24,000 sq m.

After the completion of the new terminal, the airport will have seven departure gates, which will increase capacity to more than 1000 people per hour (it is currently just 300). Investment in the project totals around 27 million lari (approximately 10 million US dollars).

Kutaisi International is used primarily as a base for low cost airlines, including Wizz Air. Currently, the airport serves 21 destinations.
