Polish court rejects request for election recount

The Polish Supreme Court has announced that it has rejected a request by the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) to recount the votes in a senate election district in the south west of the country.

After narrowly losing control of the senate, in which the opposition now holds 51 of the 100 seats, PiS has asked the supreme court to approve a recount of votes in two constituencies it narrowly lost.

In its ruling, the court dismissed the party’s arguments, saying: “There is no basis to recount the votes for the only reason that the difference between the number of votes given to two candidates was not big.”

The court has yet to rule on four further requests for recounts – from both PiS and other defeated candidates.
