Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko, EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, EU Council president Donald Tusk and European Parliament president Antonio Tajani have discussed the priorities of bilateral cooperation for the next five years during a Ukraine-EU mini-summit in Brussels.
The EU leaders and the Ukrainian head of state discussed Ukraine’s plans for energy independence, relations with Russia, energy security as well as social and economic cooperation
“In the context of the fifth anniversary of the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia, [President Poroshenko] reaffirmed unconditional commitment to the policy of de-occupation of the peninsula and its return to Ukrainian sovereignty politically and diplomatically,” Mr Poroshenko’s office said in a statement.
While discussing energy relations, Mr Poroshenko called on EU leaders to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, that will transfer Russian gas to Germany through the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukraine.
The leaders also agreed on coordinating efforts with the aim of countering external interference with regards to the upcoming Ukrainian presidential election, as well as on the launch of an EU programme to provide social and economic assistance to the Ukranian region of Pryazovia.
