EU approves financing for Bucharest metro extension

The European Union, through its Cohesion Fund, has approved 517 million euros in financing for an extension to the Bucharest metro system. The EU contribution will be invested in the construction of a new metro line serving six stations in the north of the Romanian capital.

European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu said: This Cohesion Policy investment will concretely improve everyday life for 1.8 million citizens as they will benefit from better transport connections to many destinations in Bucharest.”

The new line, M6, was originally intended to connect Bucharest with the city’s main airport in the town of Otopeni, and the Romanian government was hopeful that the EU would provide funding for the full length of the route. Disagreements over the cost of the project however have led the EU to limit its funding to cover construction of just half of the route.

“I hope the Romanian government will be able to come up with financing for the remaining section of the M6 line,” added Ms Creţu, who said that she expected construction of the M6 to begin later in 2019.
